About City
The capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, also known as Dun Eideann in Gaelic, is situated in southeast Scotland with its centre close to the southern coast of the Firth of Forth, an arm of the North Sea that extends into the Scottish Lowlands to the west. The city and its nearby vicinity make up a separate council area. The majority of the council area and the city are located in the historic county of Midlothian, as is the busy port of Leith on the Firth of Forth. However, the council area also includes a region northwest of South Queensferry that is located in the ancient county of West Lothian.
Edinburgh's position among crags and hills, as well as its tall structures and spires of black stone, contribute significantly to its dismal theatricality. Edinburgh has served as a strategic military location, the capital of a sovereign state, and a hub for intellectual endeavour. The city has constantly reinvented itself despite experiencing the vagaries of fortune on several occasions. It continues to be a significant hub for banking, law, tourism, education, and cultural affairs and is currently home to the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Executive. 102 square miles make to the area council (264 square km).
